Sporting clubs and groups

People become involved in sporting clubs and groups for many reasons: to become fit, for fun, for friendship, to learn new skills, to help out or contribute to the running of the club. They often undertake a variety of roles (Committee or Board member, coach, official, team manager or player), and often more than one.

Almost all people involved in sport are encouraging, supportive, competent and ethical in their activities. Therefore sport and recreation is an enjoyable and safe experience for most people. However, if discrimination, harassment and child abuse occurs, the experience can be very different. Discrimination and abuse in any situation can cause long-lasting emotional, physical and behavioural impacts and damage on individuals.
