There are a number of steps you and your club can take to be inclusive of people from Indigenous and multi-cultural backgrounds and prevent racism.
- Be committed to developing a welcoming and inclusive club culture.
- Appoint a liaison person to welcome and support people from Indigenous and multi-cultural backgrounds and to assist in overcoming any barriers they face.
- Develop or adopt a Member Protection Policy that clearly condemns racism. This policy should describe what constitutes a breach of behaviour and outline your club’s process for dealing with complaints.
- Communicate your Member Protection Policy and Codes of Behaviour to all members and personnel (e.g, putting up posters in club rooms, placing messages on your website and in newsletters).
- Launch specific campaigns and posters to promote zero tolerance to racism.
- Provide training and support for people in positions of responsibility so that they understand their responsibilities. Consider undertaking cultural awareness training.
- Make sure members know the identity of your Member Protection Information Officer and the steps they need to follow if they wish to make a complaint.
