  • Check if your sport has guidelines about appropriate physical contact with children, particularly techniques for demonstrating skills that require physical contact. If they don’t, request they be developed.
  • Make sure everyone who works with children understands the nature of appropriate/inappropriate physical contact and the implications of breaching codes of behaviour and guidelines.
  • Promote your club’s guidelines to parents and let them know who to contact if they have concerns about inappropriate physical contact.
  • Get parent/s or guardian/s to sign a consent form (or include it on the registration) that there may be situations where physical contact is necessary or may take place and give some examples.
  • Encourage children to tell their parents if they feel uncomfortable with their coach or other adults in the club.
