Parents - What to do now Print E-mail

As a parent the things you say and do have a major impact on your child’s perception of the world and their place within it. It’s therefore important that you understand and abide by your club’s Code of Behaviour and Member Protection Policy and that you speak up if your child’s coach engages in verbally abusive behaviour.

If your child’s coach is losing their temper, shouting and yelling:
  • support your child and listen to their concerns.
  • talk to your child’s coach if you are concerned about their behaviour.
  • monitor the situation and if it doesn’t improve, discuss the behaviour with the club’s administrator and ask them to speak to the coach.
  • document the discussion.
  • consider writing a written complaint if matters still don’t improve or you can contact:
    • your sports Member Protection Information Officer with the State’s Sports Organisation (for more information about how your sport deals with complaints);
    • your state/territory’s anti-discrimination agency (if the verbal abuse is of a sexual or racial nature); or
    • your state’s child protection agency (if the behaviour is emotionally abusive).
